How To Hold A Baby

Holding a baby is one of the most delightful experiences new parents enjoy. The warmth, closeness and unique bond that form is a cherished moment that lasts a lifetime. However, the baby you are handling is very delicate and some caution must be used to ensure that you don’t inadvertently harm your baby boy or baby girl. There are several holding techniques you can practice to safely cradle a newborn baby in your arms.

The cradle hold is a very simple and quite natural handling technique that allows you to comfortably support your baby. Gently place the baby’s head in the crook of one arm and warp your other arm around and underneath the baby’s body so you can clutch the original arm. This is a great position to hold a baby while you are talking to him, rocking him to sleep or letting other people look at him.

A good position for gassy babies or to hold a baby during burping is called the belly hold. Gently lay your baby across one of your forearms and lay your other arm across baby’s back to provide a secure hold. You can practice this hold standing up or while sitting down with your baby in your lap. For a more secure grip you can place your supporting hand between your baby’s legs.

When you baby is a few weeks old he may have enough head and neck strength to graduate to the hip hold. Place your baby on one of your hip bones facing outward and wrap the same arm around baby’s waist. This position allows your baby to view his surroundings and gives you a free arm to multi-task.

Another natural and safe handling position for your baby is the shoulder hold. Gently lean your baby against one shoulder and wrap your arm on the same side around baby’s bottom. Use your other arm to hold against your baby’s back or to support his neck. This is a great position for a baby to sleep him as it allows him to hear your breathing and relax to the sounds of your heart beating.
